Hyaluronic acid is a hyaluronate derivative that is naturally produced by the body. Generally found in the joints, eyes, and skin, this substance has been seen to enhance wound healing and helps to decrease swelling.
Cosmetically, hyaluronic acid is a humectant, due to its several binding sites. These help to draw in water and keep the skin moisturized all day. It has also been seen to increase the skin’s flexibility, reducing wrinkles and fine lines. When used with vitamin C, these products enhance the effects of one another to create lighter and brighter skin.
Hyaluronic acid is generally well-tolerated and has very few adverse reactions when used topically. It is also shown to have fewer interactions than other skin care agents such as retinol and benzoyl peroxide.
