Tadalafil, the generic for Cialis®, is indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED), but with a longer duration of effectiveness as compared to its competitors. It is in the same class of drugs (PDE5 inhibitor) as sildenafil, the generic for Viagra® and works by increasing blood flow to penile tissues.
Tadalafil vs. Sildenafil – What is the difference?
The main difference between the two medications is how long the drugs work in the body. Both medications begin to work within about 30 – 60 minutes.
A single dose of tadalafil can be effective for up to 36 hours and will only promote an erection in the presence of sexual stimulation. Sildenafil is typically effective for 4-6 hours. This difference in time has led to tadalafil being known as the “the weekender”.
How Does Tadalafil Work?
As mentioned above, tadalafil works by inhibiting the enzyme PDE5, which is located in the smooth muscles of the penis. This inhibition increases blood flow to the penis by relaxing the vascular smooth muscle. This will lead to a sustained erection. Tadalafil does require sexual stimulation to work, which means you won’t have to worry about walking around with erection at the most inopportune times.
What is a Tadalafil Troche?
Tadalafil is available in a tablet form, but we compound these medications as a troche/lozenge. We do this for two reasons: 1. faster absorption and 2. Lower cost to you. Troches are a unique dosage form that have been used for many years for drug delivery. Troches are small lozenges that dissolve between the cheek and gum or under the tongue (sublingual) over a period of about 15-30 minutes. The medication is then directly absorbed through the mucus membranes of the mouth and are effective because the lining of the mouth is thin and rich in blood supply. This allows the medicine to bypass the digestive system. Food may interfere with the absorption and cause the medicine to not work as well.
