Different types of hair loss and how we treat them

Did you know that there are multiple causes of baldness, and hair loss treatments differ from cause to cause? About half of men and women show some degree of balding by the age of 40.

Androgenetic Alopecia

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common form of hair loss in both men and women. In men, AGA is often referred to as male-pattern baldness . Hair is lost in a well-defined pattern, beginning above both temples. Over time, the hairline recedes and the hair on top of the head thins, sometimes progressing to partial or complete baldness.

AGA in Women

In women, the pattern of hair loss differs: The hair becomes thinner all over the head, often beginning with the part, and the hairline does not recede. AGA in women rarely leads to total baldness.

Treating AGA

Due to the progressive nature of AGA, treatment for hair loss should be started early and continued indefinitely, since the benefit will not be maintained when therapy is stopped.

Less Common Causes

Other forms of hair loss causes are treated differently than AGA. These include:

  • Temporary hair shedding on the top of the scalp ( telogen effluvium ), which may develop after childbirth, crash diets or taking certain medications. There is a strong link between vitamin D deficiency and this type of hair loss.
  • Patchy balding (alopecia areata; AA), which affects about 1.7% of the population, usually starting during childhood or adolescence and lasting throughout life. Ask our pharmacist about the best treatments for severe and refractory AA .
  • Post-pregnancy hair loss in women, which may benefit from topical hormone therapy.
